Hometown Hero: Legacy Will Bend Knitting Club

Posted: Updated:

A group of women in Collin County knit and crochet for people they will never meet, yet they hold them close to their hearts.

The Legacy Willow Bend Knitting Club meets once a week and turns out handmade hats, scarves, blankets and more.

In four years of knitting, an estimated 6,000 items have been made.

The knit and crocheted pieces have been given to organizations like Vogal Alcove, Jewish Family Service Food Pantry, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center in south Dallas and CASA in Dallas and Plano. Homeless children, abused children, homeless adults and the elderly are just some of the recipients.

All year long the women knit and crochet and every December they donate their items; last month almost 1,400.

Carol Sobol started this group and she keeps it going with her mah jong tournament in August. Admission is eight skeins of cotton medium weight yarn.

The women can always use more materials. People interested in donating yarn or money to buy it can call Cheryl Weitz at The Legacy of Willow Bend at 972-468-6200.
