U.S. News names top 5 "Best Diets" of 2014

Experts agree -- the best diet is the Dash Diet -- a meal plan based on dietary approaches to stop hypertension.

"A lot of good proteins, fruits, vegetables, grains.. just making healthy choices and essentially cutting the sugar, the fatty saturated meats and the salt," said fitness model, trainer and nutritionist Felicia Romero.

Romero says Dash took the top spot on the U.S. News list because it's more of a lifestyle change rather than a fad.

"Diets don't work.  It has to be a lifestyle change," she said.

Number two, the TLC diet, also emphasizes long-term health and experts say it has no major drawbacks.

"Cutting the saturated fats like the butters, high fatty meats, beef and steak.. really targeting the people who want to benefit from cardiovascular health," explained Romero.

Third on the U.S. News' list, the Mayo Clinic diet, will even try to break you of your bad habits.

"The thing I like about the Mayo Clinic diet is not only to eat healthy, but it teaches you a lifestyle, so it is very. very adamant about not eating in front of the TV.  It teaches you lifelong skills to help you remain successful in your weight loss journey," said Romero.

Tied in last place are the Dukan and Paleo diets.  Dukan requires dieters to eat only protein.  Paleo increases meat intake while eliminating grains and dairy.  Nutritionists say they're just not practical.

"You're gonna lose weight fairly quickly, but you're also gonna gain it back quickly," said Romero.
