NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New York City health officials are urging locals to get flu shots, especially for their young children. The Health Department said vaccination levels are rising but remain below the goals set by the federal government.

"More New Yorkers die from influenza and pneumonia than from any other infection," Dr. Thomas Farley, the city's health commissioner, said in a statement. "The best way to prevent influenza is to get vaccinated. If you think it is too late, think again. We are just now heading into peak flu season."

The city said one-third of children under 5 didn't get vaccinated against the flu, and health officials want that to change. For the 2014-15 school year, children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years enrolled in city-licensed day cares and preschools must get vaccinated against the flu by December 31 each year, the Health Department said.
