(WJBK) -

Two people are in police custody Wednesday for a suspected carjacking. The suspects were arrested after a police chase that ended with police firing shots near a bus stop in Southfield.

A white, four door Chevy was carjacked at Catalpa Drive and Greenfield Road, according to police. An adult victim gave up the vehicle and called 911. Oak Park Police then picked up the chase as the Chevy drove south on Greenfield Road at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then pulled into the Northland Mall Shopping Center parking lot.

Two police vehicles were damaged. The suspects were ordered to get on the ground, and both put hands in their coats which appeared to be a threat, a police source tells Fox 2's Ron Savage. In return, police fired several shots but neither suspect was hit. Two men were taken into custody.

A witness waiting for a bus nearby describes the situation to Savage: "The young man hopped out of the car. And, I guess, the officer smacked that mound. Once he smacked that mound he fired three shots at him and he hit the snow. He went over there, started tackling him, beating him, all types of stuff to the guy. And then when they handcuffed him they other guy, I think they let one of the guys go and took the other two down."

The number of shots fired by police has not been confirmed.
