Metro Detroit hospitals see increasing number of influenza patients

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

Hospitals throughout metro Detroit are packed as this flu season could turn out to be one of the worst.

"Right now we are seeing a 25 to 30 percent increase in our daily volume," says Dr. Mary Jo Malafa from St. Joseph Mercy, and flu season is just beginning. She says every single room in the hospital is filled with patients and many are struggling with symptoms of the H1N1 flu virus. The number of patients is expected to increase as students are returning to schools after snow days and the holiday break.

On top of that, the recent subzero temperatures are making some patients more miserable. "People with asthma and COPD, chronic long problems, have more problems when they are exposed to the cold, but it doesn't necessarily increase the flu virus," she says.

WHEN TO GO TO THE ER

Check in with your physician or go to the emergency room if you have a fever that is not responding to medication.

STAYING HEALTHY

+ Stay away from people who are coughing
+ Urge co-workers who come in sick to go home
+ Flu vaccinations are still available
