Prosecutors: NY inmate plotted to kill judge

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a New York con man sought to have a hit man decapitate a judge and prosecutor to avenge his fraud conviction.

Jurors in New York City heard the accusations in opening statements Thursday at the attempted murder trial of Joseph Romano of Long Island.

Romano was sentenced in 2012 to 15 years in prison for a collectible coin scheme. Six months later, another inmate contacted authorities saying Romano wanted the judge and prosecutor dead.

Another prosecutor tells jurors that Romano later arranged for a business partner to pay $40,000 to kill the pair. The man he was to pay was a federal agent posing as a hit man.

A defense attorney says the other inmate entrapped Romano. He also says the victims were never in danger.
