Parents camp out to get kids into Chandler school

Posted: Updated:

The wait is over for a group of parents who camped outside of a Chandler Elementary School, trying to ensure a spot at the school for their children.

Open enrollment started at Chandler Traditional Academy on Monday.

At 7:30 a.m., a very excited principal stamped application number one.

Florence Swanson has been running CTA for four years.  This is her second year with open enrollment.

"We move everyone as quickly as we can through," she said.

The first application was handed in by a father who had been waiting since 7:30 p.m. Friday -- 72 hours in line.

"I was responsible for my kid.  I'm here to make sure he gets the best education and this is one of the best schools in town," said Parbiz Azad.

The kindergarten through 6th grade school brings in top test scores, exceeding national and district standards.

The Chandler Unified School District changed enrollment rules two years ago, all but forcing those who live outside of the school's boundaries to line up.

"Really, it was just fun talking to all the parents.  It's nice because hopefully, these are all the parents you will be interacting with for the next six to seven odd years," said Mark Leo, a father.

Now that the applications have been time stamped, they'll be taken to the district office where they'll be placed in a first come first serve basis.  Parents will find out if their kids get in anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months.

Four minutes after they started, every application had a time stamp.  Every parent was hopeful their child will fill a seat in one of five kindergarten classes opening next year.

Currently, there are about 125 openings, but that number could change depending on if students move or decide not to enroll.
