Arlington man gets 40 years in ex-girlfriend's death

Posted: Updated:

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Officials say a North Texas man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty in the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend.

The Tarrant County district attorney's office says 39-year-old Larry Fikes pleaded guilty Monday to murder in the slaying of Angela Bynum in January 2013. The plea came as he was set to go to trial this week.

Fikes must serve 20 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.

After Bynum didn't show up at the Arlington pub where she worked, her co-workers went to her apartment, where they found her stabbed multiple times and her 13-month-old son was missing.

Fikes is the child's father and police found the boy the next day with him. Fikes was arrested several days later.
