Law enforcement officials in Ellis County canceled the Amber Alert for a missing 16-year-old girl after learning she packed a bag before leaving home.
The alert was issued Tuesday morning for Inez Ramirez. It said she was abducted by 23-year-old Edger Barron and was in danger.
However, Ellis County Sheriff Johnny Brown said his investigators believe Ramirez willingly left with Barron.
The teen moved to North Texas from Mexico a few months. She lived in Red Oak with relatives and was supposed to go to school there, but never did. Instead she started hanging out with Barron, who is also from Mexico.
Ramirez's relatives saw her pack a bag and get into Barron's truck sometime after midnight. They reported her as a runaway, the sheriff said.
Investigators do not believe she is in any danger. They suspect she and her boyfriend are heading back to Mexico.
Sheriff Brown said the case no longer meets the criteria for an Amber Alert. He is still trying to figure out why it was issued in the first place.
"This system is very important and I want to figure out how it got to this stage. I'm trying to get to the bottom of it," he said.
