Jurupa Brushfire Burns Several Structures

Posted: Updated:

A wind-driven, two-acre fire burned homes, other structures and vehicles and triggered evacuations in Jurupa Valley today.

Firefighters were sent to the 5900 block of Mission Boulevard at 10:36 a.m. on a report of a fast-moving blaze involving multiple structures, vehicles and vegetation, on a day of high fire danger due to strong winds and low humidity.Eleven outbuildings, four residential structures, three motorhomes, two other structures and 40 vehicles were burned, Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann said.

One firefighter was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The blaze was 85 percent contained at 4:15 p.m.

A square-mile area was put under mandatory evacuation, from Pacific Avenue to Mission and Riverview Drive to 42nd Street. Evacuated locations included Rubidoux Child Care Center and West Riverside Elementary School.

Students were taken to Mission Middle School in Riverside, and an evacuation center was set up at Patriot High School, 4355 Camino Real in Jurupa Valley, Hagemann said. A number of power lines were reported down in the area, she said.

A man told a broadcast reporter at the scene that he narrowly escaped before flames engulfed his home. He said a neighbor had alerted him to get out.

Mission Boulevard was closed at Pacific Avenue, and 110 firefighters were sent to the scene, Hagemann said.
