Dallas Fire officials are investigating a fire that damaged a playground at Arcadia Park Elementary School in Dallas, and they say they suspect arson could be the cause.
Fire officials said they received a 911 call for a grass fire shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the 1300 block of N. Justin Avenue. When firefighters arrived they discovered it was the playground that was burning.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, but the equipment was completely destroyed.
"I thought the whole school was gonna burn down, but actually, it was just the playground," said fifth grade student Enrique Rodriguez, who caught the blaze on camera.
Children at the school had to have recess inside on Wednesday due to the fire.
DISD officials estimate the total cost of the damage is $50,000 and the charred equipment will be removed on Thursday.
DISD said donations to build a new playground would be appreciated and interested parties should contact the school.
The school says its suffered vandalism before, but never anything as bad as the fire.
Fire officials said there were no injuries and the investigation continues into just how the fire was started.
