Closed Dominick`s stores transition into Jewel-Oscos

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Four Dominick's grocery stores are scheduled to reopen under the Jewel-Osco brand this week, and employees are hard at work to pull off a smooth transition.

Final steps of a makeover were underway Wednesday night inside the former South Loop Dominick's, one of  the four.

"I noticed they were remodeling the floors, the ceilings," said Demetrius Baharopoulos.

Long-time South Loop resident Demetrius Baharopoulos stopped by Wednesday night for some last minute shopping but left empty handed. The store was closed to customers but plans to open for business Thursday morning.

"This store of all the Jewel-Oscos I've seen in Chicago, probably 30-plus years, is probably the oldest looking of all of them so it needed an update," said Baharopoulos.

So what's new? FOX 32's Tisha Lewis went inside the former South Loop Dominick's undergoing transformation to become a Jewel Osco.

Customers can now expect more fresh cut fruits and vegetables.

"We're keeping a lot of the old fixtures, we're keeping Starbucks which a lot of the customers are going to be happy about. The deli program, we're going to have expanded fresh programs in the store," said Mike Chimera, a Store Director.

Employees have been working since Sunday to get things ready. One long-time Dominick's employee says she's grateful Jewel-Osco offered her and all her fellow employees' jobs.

"And capped the salary, raises everything. We were lucky to have our jobs, blessed," said Lupe Hanzelin, a Personnel Coordinator.

On Dominick's website there's a simple, "Thank You Chicagoland message."

Jewel Osco posted this letter to customers saying in part, "We have made many exciting changes in our stores from ramped up customer service, the freshest products, pricing, product selection and so much more."

Now it's down to the wire for the team tasked with bringing the new vision to fruition.

"It didn't look ready to me, no but people work around the clock, they bring in extra labor so I'm sure they can get it done," said Baharopoulos.

The four new Jewel-Osco locations:

• 1340 South Canal St, Chicago, IL

• 2550 N. Clybourn Ave, Chicago, IL

• 1340 Patriot Blvd, Glenview, IL

• 14200 South Bell Road, Homer Glen, IL
