A community is in mourning and police are hard at work investigating after a 17-year-old girl who was at a slumber party died.
Police arrested and released three teens on suspected murder charges following the scenario that unfolded on Saturday morning, but so far, the girl's family, friends and even police themselves aren't saying much about the case.
One girl who was at the slumber party told Fox 9 News it was a heartbreaking and terrifying night for her as she sat alongside Tara Fitzgerald, who is thoughtfully described as a talented artist, musician and avid reader in her obituary.
When asking one of the two other girls who attended the sleepover that night if Fitzgerald's death could be a drug or alcohol overdose, she said yes -- adding that she was up most of the night as she was having a reaction but didn't know what to do to help her.
Woodbury police were called just after 9 a.m. after the 17-year-old was found unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at Regions Hospital.
Over the next few days, police arrested 18-year-old Cole Matenaer and two other 17-year-old boys on probable-cause third-degree murder. Matenaer was also booked for drugs, but officers have not said what kind.
Yet, all three suspects were released back home and no one is talking while prosecutors consider charges.
At Woodbury High School, the principal said the death is a devastating tragedy for the family and community alike. Condolences are filling Fitzgerald's social media sites as questions remain.
Investigators say they will be looking closely at toxicology reports in Fitzgerald's death; however, those could take weeks. Meanwhile, Fitzgerald's funeral is planned for Saturday.
