Fire engulfs northeast Dallas apartments

Posted: Updated:

Fire damaged a northeast Dallas apartment building Thursday morning.

It happened before 5 a.m. at the Northpark Terrace Apartments near Park Lane and Abrams Road. Flames engulfed one of the exterior walls of the wood framed building.

Marsha Fleming said the smell of smoke woke her up. She lived in a second-story unit with her two teenage children and several pets.

"I could smell thick smoke and I got up and I opened the front door to let some of the smell out. I thought something was on fire. I didn't know it was my apartment. And I opened the front door and the smoke just rolled in immediately. I mean, I said 'Everybody, everybody get up. There's a fire. We gotta get out,'" she said.

There were no reports of injuries.

Two units were heavily damaged and several others have smoke and water damage.

The American Red Cross said it is helping 28 people who were displaced by the fire.
