A former Tarrant County sheriff's deputy who impregnated his 16-year-old relative was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in prison.
It took jurors only 20 minutes to decide on a sentence for 41-year-old Johnathan Helm. He was given the maximum 20 years for sexual assault of a child and 10 years for prohibited sexual conduct.
Prosecutors said DNA tests proved that he was the father of the teen's baby.
During the trial she testified Helm only abused her once, but prosecutors said she originally told police it happened on numerous occasions.
Helm took the stand in his own defense and also claimed he only "violated" the teen once. He said it happened in 2010 while he was drunk at a gathering in Oklahoma.
The former deputy resigned from his position with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department after the allegations surfaced.
The baby was put up for adoption at birth.
