Influx in flu cases puts strain on Metroplex hospitals

Posted: Updated:

Hospitals across the Metroplex are strained as more people come down with the flu.

Thursday afternoon, both Baylor Health Care System and Fort Worth's John Peter Smith Hospital announced they're under code yellow, which will allow the hospitals to better handle the large number of people with the flu or flu like symptoms.

JPS held a news conference to announce the code yellow, saying its emergency room is overrun with flu patients. That means elective surgeries are being postponed, it is not accepting transfers from other hospitals and staff members are working extra-long hours.

Some patients are so sick they're requiring longer term care.

"That fills up beds upstairs, and there's no place to put ‘em other than in the ED," said Dr. Gary Floyd, JPS Chief Medical Officer. "So we'll have, we've had as many as 35 patients waiting for admission taking up our 56 ER beds, and that kinda slows things down."

In the past three weeks, the emergency room at JPS has handled as many as 100 extra patients a day, compared to what it would see on average.

So patients, especially flu patients, are encouraged to head to one of JPS's six neighborhood clinics.

"If we don't see them, they're gonna wind up in the Emergency Department, and what our goal is, is to try and offset some of that load that's already taxed with an overload of patients," said Dr. Robert Richard with John Peter Smith Hospital.

The clinic hours are being extended into the evening and into the weekends.

That will continue until they see a decline in the number of flu cases.

Clinics open include ones at the following locations:
