Police: Man fatally shot woman at McKinney day care before taking own life

McKINNEY, Texas -

McKinney police say a man shot and killed his estranged wife Thursday outside a day care, and then turned the gun on himself.

Melissa Williams, 36, was found shot to death in her car in the parking lot of the Discovery Learning Center, which is located in the 1800 block of West White Avenue.

Witnesses told police she argued with a man in the day care parking lot around 5:45 p.m. after picking up her two children. He shot her and then fled the scene.

Williams' estranged husband, 33-year-old Cedric McFail, was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a home on Frontier Lane.

On Friday the mood outside the day care was somber. A chaplain was called in to help the staff, children and their parents cope with what happened.

"The children know that something went wrong yesterday. Some of the children are more aware of what happened than others," said Doug Roberts with Victim Relief Ministries. "Some of the children are asking questions and we are doing our best to answer those questions."

Williams' children are now in the custody of Child Protective Services.
