Avonte Oquendo's remains identified

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The medical examiner's office has confirmed that remains found along the East River are those of Avonte Oquendo, the autistic teen who ran out of school almost 4 months ago.

His decomposed remains were found off College Point Thursday night. That's about 9 miles from the Long Island City school he was seen running out of October 4th.

A left arm, lower torso and legs were identified through DNA given by his family.  Pieces of the boy's clothing were also found at that time.  Parts of a skull were found a few days later.

Oquendo's family was made aware of the identification on Tuesday.

The cause of death is still pending.  Experts say the body could have decomposed in unusual ways because of the extreme weather conditions we've been experiencing.

The teen's disappearance from his Long Island City school prompted a massive city wide search.
