Fox Beat: Kevin McCarthy at the Critics' Choice Awards

Posted: Updated:
With Leonardo DiCaprio! With Leonardo DiCaprio!
Hey everyone! Kevin McCarthy here with your Fox Beat for MyFoxDC.Com! I started my week out in Los Angeles, CA where I was talking to the stars of all the Fox shows: Brooklyn Nine Nine, The Following, American Idol, New Girl, Rake and more! I also visited the set of the new Fox show Gang Related, where I spoke to actors Ramon Rodriguez and RZA.

I then traveled to Santa Monica, CA to cover the Oscar nominations and the Critics' Choice Awards.  As you may have seen with the Oscar nominations, many front-running actors/actresses/films were snubbed; Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips, Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks, Oprah Winfrey for The Butler, Forest Whitaker for The Butler and many more.  Though, the Academy did recognize Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorese for their brilliant film, The Wolf Of Wall Street.

On the same day as the Oscar nominations, I attended the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, for which I'm a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association. As a movie fan, it's not every day you get to be in the same room with most of your cinematic heroes!  As you will see with the pictures attached, I was truly geeking out to be there! The Critics Choice Movie Awards are a huge indicator as to who will the Oscars.  Since 2013, 11 of the 13 films that won Best Film at the Critics Choice Awards, went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.  Last year's Critics Choice winner, Argo, took home Best Picture at the Oscars.  This year's Critics Choice winner is 12 Years A Slave, which is still considered to be the front-runner for Best Picture at the Oscars.

I first walked over to Leonardo DiCaprio to congratulate him on his Oscar nomination from earlier today.  I was so excited that I had to tell him my theories on Inception (I'll save those for another blog post).  He was very kind and listened to my theories and we even took a photo!  He was so happy to hear that I loved Shutter Island that he gave me a fist-bump!

I then made my way over to the legendary Martin Scorsese.  There's a very specific dissolve edit that he used in The Wolf of Wall Street that I've been waiting to ask him about for months!  He proceeded to say that it was a great question and we talked for a while about the edits he made to bring The Wolf of Wall Street from a 4-hour picture to the brilliant 3-hour film we all know now!

I also had the honor of talking to Oprah Winfrey! I thanked her for the interview opportunity she gave me earlier this year!

I also talked to Oscar nominee, Bruce Dern, who received a nomination earlier that morning for his amazing performance in Nebraska!

For me though, it's the people behind the camera that really geek me out! I had long conversations with the incredible film score composer, Steve Price.  Price was nominated for an Oscar for his incredible score for Gravity.  I geeked out with Price and Gravity director, Alfonso Cuaron!

Speaking of Gravity, the film was re-released in theatres today, after it's 10 Oscar-nominations yesterday! It was my number one film of 2013 and highly worth seeing in the theatres! Make sure you see it in 3D.  I recommend seeing Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street, Nebraska, Dallas Buyers Club and Her.  Those are the five best movies playing right now!

I hope everyone has a great week/weekend! Thanks for following my adventures!

Thanks,
Kevin McCarthy
