"Homegating" Super Bowl party tips

Posted: Updated:

It's estimated that americans will spend more than $1 billion dollars on food for the super bowl. Thousands will throw parties and for many the food, not the game, is the centerpiece of the event.

Hosting a Super Bowl Party is no longer just having a few friends over for some beer and pizza, it's an event for people to show off their team spirit and with decorations, plates, glasses, and of course, the food.

"It's all about homegating, and you want to be able to entertain and have all of your items out on the table for everybody to enjoy and some little things that you want to do is you want to keep it simple. You don't want to spend your entire morning or your entire day in the kitchen cooking. So you want to be able to have some entertainment with your friends, you know perhaps play some football before the game starts" said Marc Payero, an executive chef with the National Football League.

Payero says it's not a part without the buffalo wings but including healthy items like hummus with pita chops, grilled salmon and shrimp, and black bean salsa are also a good idea.

"People are more conscious of what they are eating. So you want to be able to have options for them. It's not all about chips and dip. You know you want to have your foods that are high in protein, you want to have your nuts, you want to have your whole grain perhaps a pasta of some sort" said Payero.

Steak fajitas and tacos are fun meal ideas or even try incorporating foods from the team cities in your buffet. "You can have your clam chowder New England fans. Or you can have your grilled salmon Seahawks platter for you Seattle fans" said Payero.

So if you're hosting a party, remember to have some fun without being in the kitchen the whole time. For recipes, team products, and cooking demos check out the free NFL homegating app.
