Parades planned across Texas for MLK holiday

Posted: Updated:

Parades and celebrations have been scheduled across Texas to honor Martin Luther King Jr. on the federal holiday in his name.

Parades in North Texas are scheduled in Dallas, Grand Prairie and Fort Worth. SMU students are volunteering across the area as part of a day of service. Youths in Arlington are holding a musical event honoring King on Monday night.

A ceremony is planned Monday in San Marcos to dedicate a steel sculpture of the slain civil rights leader and President Lyndon B. Johnson.

The Crossroads Memorial, at an intersection, commemorates efforts by both men on civil rights legislation and their Oval Office meeting.  LBJ attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, now known as Texas State University.

Parades are planned in Houston and Austin holds a community march. An MLK dinner will be held Monday night in Abilene.

Some King celebrations were held over the weekend. Several hundred people attended an MLK remembrance service Sunday afternoon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in El Paso.
