Family of 13 loses home in fire

Posted: Updated:

A Butts County woman and her 12 children are in need of help after a fire destroyed their home.

Lisa Murphy's family was at church on Sunday morning when a blaze engulfed their home. Investigators say it was an electrical fire that started in the kitchen. Lisa Murphy's pastor got word of the fire just before service began and told the family to rush home.

Sadly, the family is no stranger to tragedy. In the last three years, Lisa Murphy has lost her husband to cancer. A year after that, one of her daughters passed away and four of her children came to live with Lisa. Now she's left wondering what to do after the fire destroyed the house which had served as a safe place for a dozen children – many of them adopted – aged 2 to 20.

"You have to understand, my kids, a lot of them came out of situations where they didn't really have anything," Lisa Murphy said. "So having a home is a security thing. It's stability. We've always had this."

Murphy says most of her children are coping with the loss. Neighbors have donated clothing and temporary housing -- a trailer that's pretty much wall-to-wall air mattresses for the kids to sleep on. The Murphys are thankful to have it, but it's not home.

The Murphys would like to rebuild their home, and they should find out over the next couple days how much their insurance will help them.
