Burst pipe at abandoned Detroit business icing streets, nearby parking lots

(WJBK) -

The running water at Mojave Bar and Grill is making a mess of Schaefer Highway between Fenkell and Chalfonte. The sidewalks are caked with ice and part of the road is completely blocked off.

The problem is also affecting nearby businesses.

"[We're] pretty much trapped by the ice. We can't get in or out of my parking lot," says Mike Geraghty. He owns AAA Lawnmower just down the street from Mojave. He says water has been pouring out of the building for about a week and a half.

The Mojave owner was given an eviction notice in June and the pipes inside likely burst during the thaw following our first cold snap. While Fox 2 was on the scene Monday a crew arrived and turned off the water, something Geraghty says did not happen when a crew was there last week.

"The guy went down, looked at the building and couldn't figure out how to shut the water off," Geraghty says.

Detroit's water department is urging people to report water main breaks and burst pipes at abandoned buildings ASAP.

Residents across town on near Lappin and Redmond are concerned about a big water main break in their neighborhood.
