Suspect allegedly hits officer before rolling truck

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -

A man is facing several serious charges, including aggravated assault on law enforcement after striking a Mesa Police officer with his pick-up truck Tuesday morning.

Mesa Police say two of their officers were making a traffic stop around 5 a.m. near Cicero and Higley.  As an officer approached the driver's door, the man allegedly hit the officer with the door and side of the truck as it sped off.   Officers then followed the suspect into a neighborhood.

The truck eventually exited the neighborhood near Higley and Adobe.

"He failed to negotiate this turn here.  He came in too quickly and rolled the vehicle," said Sgt. Sean Kelly.

Police say they believe the injures are minor for both the driver and the officer, but they were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The driver was identified as 37-year-old Rogelio Vargas.  He is also being evaluated for DUI because police say he showed signs of impairment.

According to police, Vargas will likely face charges of Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement, Unlawful Flight, possible DUI (drugs) and some traffic violations.
