First look: FOX Sports Super Bowl set

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It stands 40 feet high, it extends 40 feet wide and with a totally exposed miniature football field on its top floor (where it would've felt really cold on a day like Tuesday) the FOX Sports Super Bowl set is the largest structure ever erected in Times Square.

"It's the biggest thing to ever happen here," FOX Sports Vice President of Field Operations Jerry Steinberg said of the bi-state event his network's covering. "We've never had an Olympics in the city of New York, and this is our first Super Bowl."

Steinberg uses "we" and "our" because he grew up in the Bronx.

"Eight blocks from Yankee Stadium," he said.

Steinberg has overseen 14 World Series', nine Daytona 500s, the Stanley Cup finals and all seven of the Super Bowls his network has ever carried. But, Tuesday, he called the monstrosity going up in Times Square (again, in his hometown) his masterpiece.

"This city is in my DNA," he said, "so to be able to come here and be involved in a project of this scope -- this set, what we're doing over in New Jersey, this game -- it's huge."

Huge like the multiple-story, climate-controlled studio it took 22 trucks to transport in pieces so -- next week -- FOX Sports 1, Good Day New York, and the Fox News Channel will be able to broadcast in comfort from one of the more scenic vantage points in the city.

"Right down south into NFL Boulevard," Steinberg said, gesturing toward Broadway from where the Times Square set's anchor desk will sit, "that screams New York City."

In case you were wondering, Steinberg, who has been at this a while, was not also gesturing toward his own own retirement or some vacation time on that horizon.

"This is a vacation," he said of his current assignment.

Steinberg may tell you he's on the back nine of life (he told us just that, in that verbiage), but Steinberg's bio reveals he continues to supervise 300-plus live sporting events a year. And for a Bronx-born kid who grew up loving all sports, Steinberg landing this job, building this set and putting on his hometown's first ever Super Bowl, well, he says it better than we can: "The fact that I ended up doing this for a living is one of the great blessings in life."

Summit at City Hall to discuss police-community relations

    Thursday, July 31 2014 7:29 AM EDT2014-07-31 11:29:54 GMT
Ways to improve the relationship between the NYPD and communities in New York City will be at the center of a summit held at City Hall on Thursday. Mayor Bill de Blasio, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton, Rev. Al Sharpton, city officials and community leaders are expected to attend the round table. Accusations of police brutality and the death of a man under arrest for selling un-taxed cigarettes on Staten Island lead Mayor De Blasio to host the forum.

The saying art is autobiographical takes on a whole new meaning when your canvas is a fully nude human body, as it is for artist Andy Golub. Andy along with 30 other artists and 45 Technicolor models paraded around several Manhattan hotspots over the weekend for NYC Body Painting day. Believe or not, this is completely legal in New York City.

Emotions about police brutality were still raw at a protest in Harlem Wednesday night. Eric Garner died after police put him in an apparent choke hold. Cops stopped garner for the minor offense of selling loose cigarettes in Staten Island. Officers had been enforcing the so-called broken windows policy.
