Lack of federal funding putting new Detroit-Canada bridge on hold

The Synder administration's efforts to build another bridge between Detroit and Canada has run into a road block in Washington. The on and off ramps of the bridge would need to flow into a U.S. Customs Plaza where vehicles would be processed, and the state transportation director reports Washington has not allocated the money for the plaza. The president has put the dollars in the budget but Congress has not sent the money along.

"No plaza? No bridge," says MDOT Director Kurt Steudle.  

"When we get back to Washington next week we will get right into that, to see what that issue is," says Sen. Carl Levin.

In the meantime the governor is concerned and Steudle admits the state could pay for this, but that Washington, not the state, should pay for federal projects.
