PHOENIX (AP) - A 36-year-old man is in custody after a laser was pointed at a police helicopter flying over north Phoenix.

Police say the helicopter was on patrol Tuesday night when a green light struck the cockpit. The crew then used a spotlight to light up a hill near a resort and saw a man standing in the area.

Resort security detained the man until officers arrived. Officers searched the area where the man was seen and found a handheld laser.

Police say Edward Bebec was arrested and jailed on suspicion of two counts of endangerment.

Police say they don't know whether Bebec has a lawyer.

Police say pointing a laser at aircraft is dangerous because it can cause eye injuries and potentially cause a pilot to lose control of an aircraft.
