We are certainly in the "dead of winter," and if you don't want to discover a dead car, there are some things you need to keep in mind. Kenny "The Car Guy" Walters, from Mufflers and More in Walled Lake, says winter in a key time to check your engine for hidden dangers.

Here are some of Walter's warning signs:

1. Lights on your dashboard remain on.

2. Your car jerks, surges or stalls, possibly due to bad spark plugs or clogged fuel lines or fuel filters.

3. Grinding noise when you attempt to start your car. Starter motor might need to be replaced.

4. Bad smells coming from inside your car. The scent may be a cooling or oil leak. This may indicate dangerous exhaust gases entering your car's interior. If the inside of your car smells like you're standing behind it, get out and get it fixed immediately.

5. Smoke signals out of your tailpipe. If it's blue smoke, oil is escaping and being burned along with fuel. White smoke means antifreeze has mixed with the fuel supply.
