Child shot in Dallas home invasion

Posted: Updated:

A 4-year-old girl was shot during a home invasion robbery Thursday in the west Oak Cliff area of Dallas.

It happened at an apartment complex near Loop 12 and West Jefferson Boulevard, when two armed men broke into an apartment around 4 a.m., where the little girl, Lanayia, was fast asleep in bed.

Lanayia's mother was in the next bedroom, and her uncle was asleep in the living room.

"I didn't hear them come in, the first come in, until I heard the gunshot," said the little girl's mother, Amber Brightman.

Brightman says her brother struggled with one of the gunmen, and shots were fired as they wrestled. While that was happening, a second gunman kicked down the front door.

"That's what made me run back to the room, and we got my 9-month-old little girl and we got out the window," said Brightman.

In the midst of the chaos, Lanayia was sitting in her bed with a gunshot wound.

"When I came back to the house, the people said, ‘Your little girl has been shot,'" said Brightman. "I was thinking she was dead, and when I came in she was up. And the lady upstairs above us, her and my brother was pushing down on her. I just broke down and started crying."

Lanayia was released from the hospital and is doing OK.

"He took only $30," said Brightman. "You could have ended a 4-year-old's life for $30."

Police are still looking for the two armed robbers, and they are pursuing two separate charges in this case -- aggravated robbery and injury to a child.

While the family is doing OK, they're terrified to go back to the apartment and will be staying somewhere else for now.
