Ga. bill would allow Christmas decorations in schools

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

One Georgia lawmaker says he thinks public schools should be allowed to display religious and holiday decorations.

State Sen. Mike Dugan plans to introduce a bill in this year's session of the General Assembly that would give public schools the okay to display Christmas decorations as long as they display decorations for holidays of other religions.

The Carrollton Republican says secular decorations for traditional winter celebrations such as frosty would also be permitted.  He told All News 106.7's Scott Kimbler that the bill would also help keep school systems out of the courtroom.

"It's authorizing us to do stuff that we are allowed to do now," Dugan said. "It just clarifies it for the school boards and provides them a sense of, okay, the clarity is there for us and we're not worried about a lawsuit coming up as a result of us recognizing winter celebrations."

Senate Bill 283 passed the Education and Youth Committee unanimously and now heads to the rules committee.  If approved there, the bill would then head to the Senate floor for a vote.
