Man On Mission To Walk Barefoot For A Year

Posted: Updated:

A Louisville man's on a mission to walk barefoot for an entire year! He's ditching his shoes to raise money and awareness for people who don't have them.

FOX's Kelly Davis explains.

You could say Richard Hudgins' journey didn't exactly start off on the right foot.

"The day it started was the day before it snowed, it was December 4th," Hudgins said. "Just that first hour and a half, I was like no way I can't do this, there's no way."

but then someone anonymously donated $5 to his cause and he was determined to go through with it.

Now he's been active more than 50 days later.

"I'm really waiting for my feet to build up the tolerance, it hurts," Hudgins said.

There's nothing easy about Richard's barefoot adventure, but the cause keeps him going.

"Millions of children are without shoes and these kids are dying and having their limbs cut off just because they don't have anything to protect their feet," Hudgins said.

Richard doesn't spend his days hibernating at home. He continues to work at Wild Hairz Salon, and even steps his bare feet in restaurants.

"I haven't had any restrictions yet, all of these businesses have been extremely supportive I'm so happy to live in this town that we have these businesses who are absolutely fine with it." Hudgins said.

But not everyone is fine with it. Richard gets mixed reactions: a lot of laughs and a few bad looks.

"It is very awkward and it's kind of humiliating in a way, I guess, I don't want it to be and I don't want to be humiliated because I know I'm doing it for a good cause," Hudgins said.

He encourages people with questions to just ask. In the meantime, he's counting down his barefoot days.

"As hard as it is, it's probably one of the best things that I've ever done," Hudgins said,
