Tired of pumping your own gas? Drive-thru robotic gas pumps could be on the way

Posted: Updated:

This is not some futuristic dream. This is 18 months of research and work in action. It’s a demonstration showing how robots can pump gas.

One of the companies behind the technology is Husky Corporation.

"It’s going to be very similar to a car wash situation,” said Brad Baker, Executive Vice President of Husky Corporation. “You`re going to drive up put your credit card in."

Baker showed us how customers will touch a screen to make their selections.

Infrared cameras and lights look for the outline around the fuel door.

"Once that`s been identified, that`s when the suction cup can come to the outside and actually open up the door,” said Baker.

Once the door is opened, the fuel nozzle goes in. Many newer cars no longer have fuel caps that screw off and on. Owners of older cars can purchase this type of adapter for about $5.

Husky Corporation and its partner, Fuelmatics, showcased this product during a recent trade show.

Based on feedback and market research, the companies are confident drive-thru fueling will be the way of the future.

"I think it`s going to have an appeal in northern regions especially where weather is really bad,” Baker said.

Baker says drive-thru fueling is about 30 percent faster than pumping gas manually.

The company already makes fuel nozzles and other gas pump-related products.

Baker believes he is nine months away from putting the product up for regulatory testing and approval.
