A Cedar Hill church is fighting to stay open after police say a former employee embezzled thousands of dollars over a two year period.
Mary Ramos, 41, was arrested this past week. The church's pastor says he had no idea his former officer administrator had stolen the money until the IRS cam knocking.
"An IRS agent showed up and told us we owed $136,000 of back payroll taxes," says Pastor Robby Spradling. "That was very confusing."
Police say after she stole the money, Ramos resigned from her job at the church and disappeared. Investigators say after she was arrested, Ramos admitted to stealing the money.
Pastor Spradling says a bankruptcy judge will rule next month about the church's fate. The bank could potentially take the church building depending on what the judge decides.
The church has to come up with at least $200,000 to pay the IRS for back taxes.
