Dad Vows To Keep Love For Daughter No Matter What

Posted: Updated:
Glen Allen, VA -

A dad is preserving his love for his daughter through hundreds of inspirational napkin notes. Virginia dad William Garth Callaghan has been leaving little notes in his daughter Emma's lunchbox since she was in kindergarten. She's 14 years old now.

In the past two years, Callaghan has been diagnosed with cancer three times. He tells FOX 29 that his condition has made him aware of his limited time on earth. He wants to make the most of his time with his daughter and connect with her the best he can.

A dad's love for his daughter will stay forever, and for Callaghan, he's writing 800 notes for Emma to continue the tradition of lunchtime napkin notes even if he passes. A different little note of inspiration and encouragement for Emma will be in her lunchbox every day until she leaves high school.

Some of the messages are his own. One reads:

Dear Emma,

I prayed for a daughter. I was blessed beyond belief when you arrived.
Stay Awesome!

Love, Dad

Another reads:

Dear Emma,

Sometimes when I need a miracle, I look in to your eyes and realize I've already created one.

Love, Dad

A third one reads, "I am never too busy for you."

Others notes are inspired by famous people throughout time. For example: "Do the right thing when no one is looking."

Or "Happiness depends on ourselves."

Callaghan has started a blog to record his notes. You can read more here.

Callaghan emphasizes to FOX 29 that he does not consider himself a terminal cancer patient like what some might think. Every parent's time on this world is limited, he tells FOX 29, and Callaghan just wants to use his simple gesture and his blog to inspire parents to try best connect with their kids and make every moment count.

Emma herself has begun writing notes back to her dad as well.

In one note, Emma wrote, "an arrow can only be shot by pulling it backwards[,] so when life is dragging u back It means [it's] going to launch you into something awesome."

Another note, left by Emma, thanks her dad for being such a role model. In the note, Emma thanked her dad for teaching her how to be a leader. Callaghan was almost brought to tears by her little gestures of appreciation, he tells FOX 29.

And Emma isn't the only one inspired. Viewers of the note have been giving words of love for Callaghan.

"What an inspiration you are to others. The love you have for your daughter is amazing. May God look down upon you and give you many more years together," wrote Denise Wilder.

"You're certainly doing your part, Dad!" commented Sue Adams.

Callaghan also tells FOX 29 that writing on napkins is something that feels more tangible and valuable. Being a self-professed "geek" who has had a computer since he was four, Callaghan wanted to do something that put more effort and thought into the action. That's how he originally came up with the idea of writing little notes on paper napkins when his daughter was little. Despite being a Facebook person and even knowing how to text his daughter, Callaghan feels more connected and genuine when he can sit down and write her something from the heart. When it's his daughter, his love for electronics takes a back seat.
