Woman injured in I-17 freeway shooting

Posted: Updated:

A valley woman driving home from church claims shots were fired by gunmen in another car.

The incident happened near Interstate 17 and the Loop 303 around 10:00 p.m. and this woman was just getting back from church band practice when the car or the truck pulled up beside her and someone started firing shots in her direction.

"It did not make sense. None of it made sense. What is going on?" said Cheryl.

Cheryl is still trying to process what happened to her last night after bullets come flying through her car window from a passing pickup truck on I-17 Monday evening.

"I looked at the window and there was a big hole and I thought maybe a rock but then boom, I said no, this is gunshots" said Cheryl.

A bullet crossed across her forehead.

"It grazed my bangs. You see I don't get haircuts like this. My hair was on my clothing where it cut it" said Cheryl.

She heard three shots, including one that popped her rear tire but she kept driving while making a panic phone call to her husband.

"I said I've been shot, call 911. This is not a joke, call 911 I'm coming to the house. Have them meet me there" said Cheryl.

She exited the highway with the shooter behind her but she positioned her SUV so the suspect could not pull up beside her.

"I'm grateful to be alive. I thank Jesus Christ who is my lord and savior who protected me" said Cheryl.

The family is speaking out hoping the person will get caught.

Detectives have few leads but they know the suspect's vehicle is an older model, dark blue, pickup truck. If you have any information about this particular case, you are asked to give Phoenix Police a call.
