AAA overwhelmed by number of calls during latest cold snap

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

AAA is being overloaded with calls of stranded drivers during this latest cold snap.

That means some drivers are waiting anywhere from 45 minutes to several hours for help.

FOX 32's Lisa Chavarria spoke to AAA about the issue.

AAA Chicago said by this afternoon they had received over 1,700 calls for help because of the enormous call volume they're not able to get out to everyone in a short amount of time.

"Very, very high call volumes today, about 250 calls an hour, we're experiencing," AAA Chicago spokesperson, Beth Mosher, said.

So many calls, that some stranded drivers are getting stranded for hours waiting for assistance.

"We're seeing anywhere from 45 minutes and longer. We are communicating very often with people about what they can expect," Mosher said.

Anne Tedeschi said she was one of the drivers stuck in her car for nearly an entire work day in the negative temperatures.

"I spent seven hours in my car, in the cold trying to get towed before I had to just drive it to a safe spot on the rim," Anne Tedeschi, a recently stranded driver said.

Her tire went flat after she hit a pot hole with her infant son in the car.

A neighbor picked up the baby after the first two and a half hours.

She waited until 4 a.m. for a proper tow truck for her electric car.

"I had to constantly rev my engine to try and get the heat to come out warmer because it gets colder after a while when the engine is not running," Tedeschi said.

AAA said they're trying to keep up with all of the calls.

"We're dealing with unprecedented cold here in Chicago and really across the Midwest, but we are trying very, very hard to get to people, particularly those in emergency situations first," Mosher said.

The calls AAA is receiving, for the most part are preventable issues.

Dead car batteries and flat tires seem to be the largest culprits for problems on the road.
