Super Lice Are Harder To Kill, Harder To Remove, Require Stronger Drugs

Posted: Updated:

New strain of lice is impossible to kill without prescription-level shampoo. It's being called "super lice" because they are stronger and resistant to insecticide.

The insecticide that can control this new strand is not available over the counter and has some dangerous side effects that can impact the infested person's cognitive skills.

Parents are recommended to try the OTC stuff first, but if the lice is resistant to it, they might require a prescription lice removal product.

Dr. Deb Lonzer told Yahoo! Health, "People completely freak out about lice due to gross-out factor, and attack very hard with chemicals, but unlike ticks or mosquitoes, lice don't transmit any diseases—they just make the scalp itchy."

Products with permethrin, like Nix, are becoming less effective. Other options like the lousebuster, ivermectin, or a shaved head will serve as effective remedies according to Dr. Lonzer.
