Student shot at apartments near Ferris State

Posted: Updated:
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -

Activities at Ferris State University, including sporting events, are being cancelled or suspended following the early morning shooting of a student at an off-campus apartment complex.

The Big Rapids school says the student is being transferred to a Grand Rapids hospital with wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening. His name and condition were not immediately released.

The shooting was reported about 4:15 a.m. Saturday at the Venlo Place apartments. The school says police were "containing the area" where the suspect was believed to be located.

Students and residents were being advised to remain indoors "and exercise extreme caution" until an arrest is made.

Men's and women's basketball games against Saginaw Valley State are among the events cancelled Saturday.

Big Rapids is about 50 miles north of Grand Rapids.
