Super Bowl Revenue

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Super Bowl XLVIII was one of the biggest events ever played in the Garden State and the night seemed to go off without a hitch. Years of planning and millions of dollars went into the big game and New Jersey’s economy saw the benefits.

The head of the New Jersey African American Chamber of commerce and part of this year’s NFL host committee, John Harmon discussed just how important this event was for New York and New Jersey.

“We have a ton of restaurants that have been offered catering opportunities in this Super Bowl, so the economical impact on these small businesses I think has been a win-win,” he said.

Harmon feels that the biggest struggle for small business owners in New Jersey is the access to opportunity.

“You hear many corporations in this state and around America they will tell their minority spin, ya know we’ve done a billion dollars with minorities over the last year, as you drill down on those numbers, African Americans tend to be nonexistent or very little. If we’re all in this state we should all benefit from the prosperity,” he explained.

Harmon also discussed the recent minimum wage increase in the Garden State. While some business owners feel like these changes have hurt their bottom dollar, Harmon disagrees.

“I think most of the business community would embrace some form of minimum wage increase,” he said.

The town of Elmwood Park relies on about 75 to 100 volunteer firefighters for emergencies.  Russell Fenn, IV is one of those volunteer firefighters. He was driving the department’s only ladder truck and crashed it into utility poles.  Police charged Fenn with driving under the influence and said that his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.
