A Richardson elementary school is on track to be one of the top fundraisers in the fight against blood cancers.
At Merriman Park Elementary School, the fight against blood cancers is personal -- two of the school's students, Hannah and Malik are fighting leukemia, and kindergarten teacher Beth Lyons is celebrating three months of remission in her fight against leukemia.
The 470 students at Merriman Park are putting their money where their mouths are – they've raised more than $15,000 for an effort called Pasta for Pennies.
The class that raises the most money gets a pasta party from Olive Garden, and all of the money raised goes to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of North Texas for research and patient assistance.
Merriman Park is one of 700 North Texas schools involved in the fundraiser.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of North Texas will hold its 30th annual fundraiser, the St. Valentine's Luncheon and Fashion Show, next week. The event will feature Mrs. Tom Landry and the Spirit of Tom Landry Character Award.
If you'd like to attend the fundraising luncheon at the Meyerson Symphony Center, call 972-996-5900 or log on to www.stvalentinesdayluncheon.org.
