Avoiding questions, Christie promises more Sandy recovery money

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said he will be stronger than the maelstrom currently surrounding his administration. He made a stop in Monmouth County Tuesday and vowed to finish the state's Superstorm Sandy rebuilding process.

Inside a Keansburg firehouse to discuss the distribution of a second round of federal funds for Sandy, the governor conspicuously avoided any questions -- storm-related or otherwise -- from reporters. He also cut off at least two constituents who tried to interrupt the governor during his remarks.

The governor, who said he spends about 40 percent of all his time on Sandy, announced $100 million in more funding toward home buyback programs and $535 million to infrastructure. But he offered no absolute assurances.

Christie is dealing with a "new normal" of sorts after breaking his month-long silence Monday night about the George Washington Bridge closures. During a radio show, he said "The fact of the matter is, I've been very clear about this, before these lanes were closed I knew nothing about this, I didn't plan it, I didn't authorize it, didn't approve it, I knew nothing about it."

Monday night, the governor also confirmed the U.S. attorney subpoenaed his office. Christie also said he retained a law firm to conduct an investigation to find out which members of his staff were behind the plan to close those bridge toll lanes.

A state legislative investigation, led by Assemblyman John Wisniewski, is also underway.

"If government is going to succeed and get things done, the citizens have to have some level of trust the government is doing it for the right reasons, and this really destroys that trust," Wisniewski said.
