Mystery Monkey Spotted In Neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

Hey Mirabay, there's a monkey hanging out in your neighborhood.

"It is like a hoo hoo ha ha," described neighbor Angie Griffin.

A neighbor was quick on the camera snapping photos.

It appears to be a rhesus macaque, the same kind found wondering St. Pete for years...and no, we're not just monkeying around here.

"All things are possible in Florida," said Bill Griffin.

You can say that again just ask FOX 13 photojournalist Corey Beckman.

"Do I feel like the monkey violated me? A little bit," he joked.

He spotted the monkey a couple weeks ago while relaxing at home.

And get this ,he believes it explains a couple odd car break-ins that happened just a week earlier, where stuff was thrown around but not taken...Monkey business?

"You'd think anybody breaking into a car wound find it nice seeing a GPS there an iPod but they just left it all sitting here," Beckman described.

It may have been sniffing out food. They are able to open doors you know, and really, what does a monkey need with an iPod?!

"I didn't have monkeys on the iPod but thats possibility maybe it didn't like my music," Beckman said.

So far no one's been hurt by the primate and some neighbors just want it captured safely and moved elsewhere. But until that happens, expect the Mirabay monkey to stay on the lam and always ready to make like a banana and split.

"After working the last monkey running around in Pinellas county that's the first thing that popped in mind 'Oh My God' we have one in our neighborhood too," Beckman said.
