Caught on Camera: Suspect rides off with 87-year-old man's trike

Posted: Updated:

He has lived in the valley a long time and at 87-years-old, his adult tricycle was the only way he could get around.

Now that trike is gone -- stolen by a couple of young thieves, but there is a solid clue -- a neighbor's surveillance cameras caught the thieves going to the scene of the crime and then pedaling away on the trike.

Glenn Diller lives by himself and he has a lot of life left in him -- he's pretty independent.   He would ride his trike everyday, pedaling to the grocery store and back.

Now he's stuck at home.

His neighbor's surveillance cameras caught two teens driving down their street -- one of them was riding Glenn's trike.

"I'm getting less able to walk every week that goes by.  I can still pedal a trike quite a distance if I want to," said Diller.

Not anymore.

Take a look at the guys in this surveillance video.  One of them is riding the trike.

Glenn says earlier this week, he parked it in his driveway after a long ride, then when he went to bring his trike in, it was gone.

"I said, well where'd I park it?  I think I parked it here.  I'm looking around to see if I moved it somewhere else and nothing and I went over to Catie and told her my bicycle tricycle is missing.."

"I felt like they had stripped him of his independence," said Catie Fulton, a neighbor.  "Most 87-year-old men.. most 87-year-olds in general don't ride a trike to the grocery store every day and keep active."

When Catie checked her surveillance video, sure enough, it showed the thieves with the trike -- now she's hoping someone out there will see this video and help Glenn get  his trike back.

"He's been down in the dumps ever since it happened, but we're hopeful someone would recognize these guys," she said.

Glenn voluntarily stopped driving his car several years ago.

"I almost caused a wreck because I didn't feel my pedals right," he said.  "I said Diller, you're getting too old and feeble to drive, so I turned around and parked it and it's been there for six years."

So this wasn't just a trike to Glenn, it was the vehicle that kept him connected to his friends and neighbors.

"That's kept me going.. I don't know what else to say.  When you get up to 87 years of age, you gotta keep moving or you freeze up."

Glenn had a personal license plate on his trike.  It had his last name, Diller, on it. He says he's had that plate for decades.

He lives in the area of 19th Avenue and Osborne in west Phoenix.  He's hoping someone will come forward with information.
