Pedestrian killed in Franklin Park Metra crash

FRANKLIN PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police have identified the woman who was struck and killed by a Metra train in a "tragic accident" Thursday morning in west suburban Franklin Park.

Metra spokesman Tom Miller said the Milwaukee District/West Line train struck the pedestrian at 7:51 a.m. about a block west of the station at Calwagner Street.

Florence Perez, 44, of the 800 block of Rowlett Avenue in Melrose Park, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement from Melrose Park police.

Police Chief Mike Witz said the woman got too close to the rail while trying to walk onto the platform north of the tracks.

"She misjudged it," Witz said, describing the incident as "a tragic accident."

An autopsy Friday confirmed Perez died of multiple injuries and ruled her death an accident, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

At the time, the railroad gates and signal were functioning and the train's horn was active, police said.

Trains were delayed but were on the move again as of 8:40 a.m., though running up to 45 minutes later.

Franklin Park and Metra police are investigating.
