Winter Weather Hits Tristate Region

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - It seems this year’s winter isn’t holding anything back when it comes to creating problems around the tri state area. Downed power lines, salt shortages, and slippery roads are plaguing the area after Wednesday’s snowfall; with more snow expected this weekend.

Workers from PSE&G were out quickly to fix the problem of downed power lines across the state. About 40,000 New Jersey customers suffered power outages because of the storm. Workers are clearing debris and re-aligning power lines that fell.

On average, that process takes about 3 to 5 hours per incident.

John Renfree, a PSE&G employee, talked about the rewarding part about doing this kind of work.

“It is our job and were getting paid to do this, but it’s rewarding sometimes, especially when you put the people back because no one likes to be without electric,” said Renfree.

If you are one of the many people who are still without power and improvising ways to heat and cook in our homes; a word of caution was given by Mercer County's Lawrence Road Volunteer Fire Department's Deputy Chief.

“I strongly advise anyone not to use their stove for power or heating their homes or try to build a fire within their residence. And if you do candles, use extreme caution,” said Chief Michael Byrd.

Many townships across New Jersey are reporting salt shortages, with towns such as Jersey City putting the blame on the Super Bowl for using all the salt in the area.

Taking to Twitter, Mayor Fulop had this to say: “Did you know salt = high value. Becoming a scarce commodity. Who would have thought! #JerseyCity.”

According to Port Authority of New York and New Jersey workers, there is enough salt left for one or two more storms but the substance is in short supply.

Sadly, Jeter the pit bull puppy is missing. While dogs go missing all the time, there are two specific things that distinguish this story from others. First, several witnesses say Jeter didn't wonder off and that they saw Jeter get taken. Second, the community has rallied in a huge way to help find the loveable pup.

Empty spaces are popping up all over Atlantic City with the closing of three major casinos: Revel, Trump Plaza, and Showboat. Even with all of this going on, the city is still trying to use eminent domain to take away the home of an Atlantic City local legend, Piano Man Charlie Birnbaum. Birnbaum has tuned pianos for icons like: Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, and John Legend. He's been a resident of Atlantic City in the same home for over 50 years.
