Cigarette thief stealing only Marlboro Reds and Newports strikes again

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

Just hours after a cigarette thief strikes at a Detroit donut shop he struck again at a Madison Heights 7-Eleven with another male suspect, once again only targeting Marboro and Newport brands.

The two suspects entered the convenience store shortly after 4 a.m. on Wednesday. Both were wearing hoodies and one also was wearing a ski mask.

The cashier asked the man to remove his mask, then went to help the men in the deli area. When the clerk was walking back to the register he was tackled by one of the suspects and held down while the second suspect gathered cartons of cigarettes.

"It's a smash and grab that's been escalated and more brazen. Now, it's turned into an armed robbery when they held a subject down they threatened to shoot him if he got up," says Lt. Robert Anderson from the Madison Heights Police Department.

Even though the clerk never saw a guy, the two suspects could face armed robbery charges.

"Anytime you have a robbery with this force and this nature, where somebody is taken to the ground like they are and their life is threatened, we take it very seriously," Anderson says.

The case was originally about workplace discrimination. Now it's dragged on for more than a decade despite the case appearing to be one that the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation can't win.
