Mesa Air Group plans to hire over 1,000 people in expansion

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

A major valley employer, Phoenix based Mesa Air Group is looking to add over a thousand jobs in the next couple of years meaning new aircraft and more business.

A while back, Mesa Air Group went through restructuring bankruptcy in order to shed a number of obsolete aircraft. But the company managed to avoid lay-offs and cutting employee benefits, now it is back in a big way.

The company is excited about new aircraft that make flying its regional routes a smooth and comfortable experience. These planes used to be sort of closed-in metal tubes but not any more. They are pretty luxurious, seating up to 76 people, like the big passenger jets we are all used to and there is a lot of room to stretch out.

Mesa Air Group is adding four of the new planes. They currently fly 69 aircraft, with almost 400 daily departures to 77 cities. Mesa Air Group CEO Jonathan Ornstein says the airline is expanding in a big way. "We will probably hire...most of them will be flight crews and mechanics and flight attendants but also people in the office...probably about 1,500 people in the next two years to accommodate that growth," said Ornstein.

Mesa Airlines says it's getting more business flying regionally for United Airlines and the new American Airlines. The company says it's stable now and a great place to work. "We have great longevity at the company...our average captain has been here 18 years, our average mechanic 9 years, our average flight attendant 7 years," said Ornstein.

Salaries can be modest to start but Mesa Air Group says pay goes up with experience. A captain on one of its jets can make $100,000 a year.
