Brick Boycotts Red Light Cameras

Posted: Updated:
Brick, New Jersey (MY9NJ) - Great news for those who despise getting red light tickets in the mail! Brick Township’s Mayor John Ducey has decided to get rid of those pesky red light cameras in his town.

Mayor Ducey is the first to take a stand in getting rid of the red light camera program. Joining Ducey on the cause was Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon. He explains why red light cameras are actually a rip-off rather than a life-saver.

“You know the camera companies have a habit of trying to continue to record information and then distort it later. To make a decision to shut the cameras down seems unwise but they’ve been blatantly caught lying about that data,” O’Scanlon said.

Along with O’Scanlon the local police department also partnered up with Mayor Ducey to study the red light cameras. The study looked at the effectiveness of accident prevention taken in the three years the cameras have been installed. Studies show the number of accidents had actually stayed the same and in some cases the number of accidents went up. Due to the results Ducey plans to shut down the cameras on February 18th.

“Other mayors are afraid of losing the revenue and I do not think it’s right to get revenue from tax payers and from citizens from something that is in place for safety but does not promote safety,” Ducey said.

This past year the cameras had generated $500,000 for Brick Township alone. Ducey acknowledges that he knows this is going to be a fight but hopes for other mayors to follow suit.
