Former UGA employee charged with fraud

Posted: Updated:

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Police say a former employee in the registrar's office at the University of Georgia is accused of using students' personal information to obtain credit cards.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports 30-year-old Derrick Leon Henderson of Athens is charged with 42 counts of identity fraud and 19 counts of financial card fraud.

University Police Chief Jimmy Williamson says the man allegedly used information from paper office records to open credit cards.

Williamson says information was obtained on 160 students, and university officials are notifying each student about the breach.

Henderson was a student when he was hired by the registrar's office last year. He has since been fired, and his home was searched on Jan. 31.

Police are looking for another suspect.
