NJ's Largest Newspaper Regrets Endorsing Christie

Posted: Updated:
TRENTON, N.J. -

New Jersey's largest newspaper says it now regrets endorsing Republican Gov. Chris Christie for re-election.

In a column posted Sunday on the Star-Ledger's website, editorial page editor Tom Moran writes, "We blew this one" and refers to Christie as the "most overrated politician in the country."

The editorial comes weeks after emails revealed Christie aides orchestrated lane closures on a bridge for apparent political retribution and a Democratic mayor accused the Christie administration of tying Superstorm Sandy aid to her support of a real estate development project. Christie has denied involvement in each.

Moran says the 2013 endorsement had been a close call, but Christie's opponent just wasn't up to the job. Moran says the newspaper opposed several of Christie's policies but felt he had made progress on improving education and reforming pension and health care costs.

"An endorsement is not a love embrace. It is a choice between two flawed human beings. And the winner is often the less bad option," Moran emphasized in the Star-Ledger editorial. Moran also had words about the upcoming presidential race in 2016, and why he fight still endorse Christie.

Moran writes:

Now ask yourself this: If the [2016] Republican primary came to a choice between [Rand] Paul and Christie, which candidate would you endorse?

At the risk of repeating a mistake, I'd pick Christie in that primary, even now. And if you think that makes some sense, then you understand how excruciating the endorsement process can be.
